Policy Priorities
Our work with policymakers comes back to three things: rules that fit the platform, programming that stays diverse, and real choice for viewers.
Importance of Proportionality
Beyond Mainstream defends against disproportionate financial and compliance burdens that risk undermining the ability of specialized platforms, who often have leaner operational structures, to grow and serve their viewers. Tailored regulation that considers the unique content and business models of specialized and emerging platforms will enable policies that protect local production while promoting innovation and supporting content diversity.
Preserving Content Diversity
Emphasizing the cultural value brought by specialized streaming platforms serving specific interests, identities, and cultural heritages is key to many of our members’ programming. Policies such as investment obligations and local content quotas risk diluting the content of specialized streamers that provides diversity to a country or region’s streaming ecosystem and fills a gap in current offerings for local viewers.
Protecting Viewer Choice
Our alliance advocates for the viewers who choose to access specialized streaming platforms. A diverse audiovisual ecosystem depends on the ability of audiences to access different types of services, not just the largest general entertainment platforms.
